BIO 210 - Anatomy & Physiology I


Class: 3 Lab: 3 Credits: 4
This is the first in a sequence of courses, including an intensive coverage of the body as an integrated whole. All body systems are studied. Note: The prerequisites for this course may be changing effective January 2018. Any changes will be posted by November 2017.

Prerequisite(s): Take MAT 101  or MAT 152  or MAT 103 , and ENG 100 , RDG 100  and (BIO 100  or High School Biology) with a minimum grade of “C”.
Course Topics:
  • Anatomical terminology describing body regions, body planes, and directional references
  • Homeostasis, negative and positive feedback
  • Chemical level of organization
  • Cellular and tissue level of organization
  • Metabolism and energetics
  • Structure and function of the integumentary system
  • Structure and function of the skeletal system
  • Structure and function of the muscular system
  • Structure and function of the nervous system
  • Structure and function of the special senses

Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Recognize the major functions of the various cells of the skeletal system.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the processes of glycolysis, glycogenolysis, gluconeogenesis, and glycogenesis.
  3. Recognize the outcomes of the chemical reactions involved in the Citric Acid Cycle.
  4. Recognize the role of Na+-K+ ATPase in the generation of muscle/neuron cell transmembrane electrochemical gradients.
  5. Demonstrate knowledge of the components of a sarcomere.
  6. Distinguish among voltage-gated, chemically or ligand-gated, and mechanically-gated channels.
  7. Distinguish between activities either stimulated or inhibited by the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems.
