EEM 251 - Programmable Controllers


Class: 2 Lab: 3 Credits: 3
This course is an introduction to programmable control systems with emphasis on basic programming techniques. A variety of input/output devices and their applications are covered.

Prerequisite(s): Take EEM 151 .

  • Safety
  • History of Programmable Logic Controller (PLC)
  • Overview of a PLC System
  • Intro to Programming Languages/Software
  • Manipulating Field Devices with a PLC

CAMIT Basic Toolkit which is normally purchased for EEM 117 .

Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Implement AND, OR, or NOT logic to solve a problem.
  2. Translate gate logic into ladder logic.
  3. Describe digital and analog inputs and outputs.
  4. Identify the connections to a PLC using electrical prints, electrical diagrams, or field wiring diagrams..
  5. Design and implement ladder logic program utilizing the applicable software.
  6. Identify in a PLC environment data types of bits, nibbles, byes, and words.
