PHM 114 - Therapeutic Agents I


Class: 3 Credits: 3
This course provides an introductory study of therapeutic drug categories.

Prerequisite(s): Take ENG 100  and RDG 100  with a minimum grade of “C”.

  • Basic Concepts of Pharmacology
  • Dispensing Medications
  • Antibiotics
  • Therapy for Fungal and Viral Infections
  • Anesthetics and Narcotics
  • Psychiatric and Related Drugs
  • Drugs for Central Nervous System Disorders
  • Respiratory Drugs

Required Materials:

  • Basic 4-function calculator
  • Pen with black or blue ink

Grading System:
An overall grade of C or higher is required for transferability.

Student Learning Outcomes:

  1. Describe the historical development of Pharmacology including the important contributors, events, and resources in the development of pharmacology through the ages.
  2. Explain the basic concepts of pharmacology in relationship to the pharmacokinetic process.
  3. Explain the different processes and importance of dispensing medications.
  4. Identify and explain the therapeutic and adverse effects of prescription medications, nonprescription medications, and alternative therapies commonly used to treat:
    • bacterial, fungal, and viral infections;
    • diseases of the nervous system;
    • psychiatric and mood disorders;
    • diseases of the central nervous system;
    • diseases of the respiratory system.
  5. Identify the most commonly prescribed drugs.
