SOC 102 - Marriage and the Family Class: 3 Credits: 3 This course introduces the institutions of marriage and the family from a sociological perspective. Significant forms and structures of family groups are studied in relation to current trends and social change.
Prerequisite(s): Take SOC 101 with a minimum grade of “C” required. Course Topics:

- The Family in Historical Perspective
- Racial and Ethnic Families: Strengths and Stresses
- Socialization and Gender Roles
- Romance, Love, and Loving Relationships
- Sexuality and Sexual Expression Throughout Life
- Choosing Others: Dating and Mate Selection
- Singlehood, Cohabitation, Civil Unions, and Other Options
- Marriage and Communication in Intimate Relationships
- To Be or Not To Be a Parent
- Raising Children: Promises and Pitfalls
- Balancing Work and Family Life
- Domestic Conflict and Divorce
- The future trends with regard to the American family.
