EMS 119 - Emergency Medical Services Operations Class: 1 Lab: 3 Credits: 2 This course is a multi-faceted approach to theory of EMS operations. Topics include expanded provider roles, EMS systems overview, medical/legal aspects, theory of ambulance operations, mass casualty incident management, rescue awareness, crime scenes, terrorism, and weapons of mass destruction.
Prerequisite(s): Take EMS 106 with a minimum grade of “C” or hold NR EMT Certification and SC EMT Certification. Course Topics:
- Principles of safely operating a ground ambulance
- Incident management
- Multiple casualty incidents
- Air medical
- Vehicle extrication
- Hazardous materials awareness
- Mass casualty incidents due to terrorism and disaster

Student Learning Outcomes:
- Construct a working plan to establish and work within the incident management system.
- Use triage principles to categorize acutely traumatized patients with varying injuries and of varying acuity levels.
- Describe safe utilization of air medical resources.
- Discuss principles of safe vehicle extrication that includes the need for, and use of simple hand tools.
- Describe risks and responsibilities of operating in a cold zone at a hazardous material or other special incident.
- Describe risks and responsibilities of operating in an emergency or on the scene of a natural or man-made disaster.
