PNR 121 - Fundamentals of Pharmacology

Class: 1 Lab: 3 Credits: 2
This course is an introduction to basic concepts of pharmacology. Dosage calculations, medication administration, and common drug classifications are among the concepts explored.

Prerequisite(s): Take COL 101, ENG 101, PSY 201, BIO 112 and MAT 110 or MAT 120 with a minimum grade of “C”.

Corequisite(s): PNR 110

Dimensional analysis approach to solving dosage calculations
Legal aspects affecting drug administration and principles of pharmacology
Prototype drugs within specific classifications:
- Chemotherapeutic Agents
- Drugs acting of the Immune System
- Drugs acting on the Central and Peripheral Nervous Systems
- Drugs acting on the Autonomic Nervous System
- Drugs acting on the Endocrine System
- Drugs acting on the Cardiovascula System
- Drugs acting on the Renal System
- Drugs acting on the Respirtory System
- Drugs acting on the Gastrointestinal System

An overall grade of B or higher is required for transferability

Discuss the use of informatics and safe administration of pharmacological and parenteral therapies. (PLO 1)
Calculate dosages for patients receiving pharmacological and parenteral therapies. (PLO 1)
Discuss patient safety concerns and pertinent data (labs, vital signs, allergies, potential interactions) related to administration of pharmacological and parenteral therapies. (PLO1)
Identify common classifications of medications and safety assessments to make prior to administering them. (PLO 1)
