ENG 238 - Creative Writing Lecture Hours: 3 Credits: 3
Description: This course presents an introduction to creative writing in various genres.
Prerequisite(s): Take ENG 102 with a minimum grade of C. Course Topics: Topics covered in ENG 238 will necessarily vary depending upon the genre of creative writing being presented. Textbooks: Textbook information can be found on the Book Inn website Required Materials:
- Computer with Windows 2000 or newer
- Ability to format papers as .docs, .doc, .rtf, or .html
Please note that many instructors will not accept assignments that are not formatted as .doc or .docx
- Internet access
Grading System: An overall grade of C or higher is required for transferability.
A = 90 - 100
B = 80 - 89
C = 70 - 79
D = 60 - 69
F = 0 - 59 Student Learning Outcomes:
- Synthesize and apply the concepts of craft, theory, and technique on creative writing to their work and the work of others.
- Identify the basic techniques and terminology of fiction writing, creative non-fiction writing, and poetry writing.
- Apply critical reading skills for critiquing fiction, essays, and poetry.
- Employ the Iowa workshop method to critique creative writing samples.
- Apply principles of revision in the creative writing process and recognize its significance.
- Produce a portfolio of original works in the genre that demonstrates the ongoing process of drafting, critiquing, evaluating, and revising his or her original writing in the genre.
