HUS 101 - Introduction to Human Services


Lecture Hours: 3 Credits: 3

Description: This course covers an overview of the field of human services. Role responsibilities, problems, boundaries, and strategies of human service workers are included.

Prerequisite(s): Take RDG 100  and ENG 100  with a minimum grade of C.
Course Topics:
  • History of and current issues in human services 
  • Ethical, professional, and legal issues 
  • Theoretical perspectives 
  • Skills, processes, and case management 
  • Couples, families, and groups
  • Cultural competence
  • Consultation and supervision 
  • Working with varied client populations
  • Research, evaluation, and assessment

Grading System:
An overall grade of C or higher is required for transferability.

A =  90 - 100
B =   80 - 89
C =   70 - 79
D =   60 - 69
F =     0 - 59


Student Learning Outcomes:

  2. Evaluate the ethical and legal standards in human service delivery.
  3. Demonstrate an attitude of basic cultural competence.
  4. Evaluate the history and current state of the human services field.
