MLT 253 - Clinical Experience III


Lecture Hours: 1 Lab Hours: 0 Clinical Hours: 12 Credits: 5

Description: This course provides an inegrated, clinically-based rotation which correlates cognitive and technical skills in selected areas of the clinical laboratory. 

Prerequisite(s): MLT 112 MLT 251 , and MLT 252 
Course Topics:
  • Performance of tests in areas of Transfusion Medicine (Blood Banking), Hematology, Chemistry, Microbiology, and Urinalysis.
  • Collecting blood samples via venous and capillary punctures.
  • Correlating laboratory test results with patient diagnosis and treatment.

Required Materials:
  • Each student will be required to attend OSHA and HIPPA training at one of the clinical facilities or complete OSHA or HIPPA training on campus prior to beginning clinical training.
  • Students must wear a Photo ID while training at the clinical facility. The Photo ID is obtained in Admissions. The student must purchase a lanyard or clip to display the ID on their person at all times. 
  • Prior to entering a Health and Human Service program each student must submit the specific Require Tests/Immunizations Documentation and Medical History forms with appropriate information documented and signed by their physician.
  • At the beginning of the second year of training, each student must be res tested for tuberculosis.
  • A criminal background investigation (CBI) and drug testing are required for each Health and Human Services student who has been accepted into a curriculum program of study with clinical experiences.
  • All students must wear clean, well-fitting scrubs to class and clinical. 

Grading System:
An overall grade of C or higher is required for transferability.

A =  90 - 100
B =   80 - 89
C =   70 - 79
D =   60 - 69
F =     0 - 59

3.    Apply basic principles in all procedures in Clinical Chemistry.
4.    Apply basic principles in all procedures in Microbiology, Parasitology, and Serology.
5.    Apply basic principles in all procedures in Hematology and Hemostasis.
6.    Apply basic principles in all procedures in Urinalysis.
7.    Apply basic principles in all procedures in Blood Collection.
