ECD 252 - Diversity Issues in Early Care and Education


Lecture Hours: 3 Credits: 3

Description: This course meets the growing needs for students in early care and education to learn how to interact with people who are different from them.  It also allows students to examine and appreciate the differences that exist because of diversity from race, language, ethnicity, age and socio-economic levels. 

Prerequisite(s): Take ECD 102  with minimum grade of C.

  • A World of Resources:  Engaging Families, Friends, and the Community

Grading System:
An overall grade of C or higher is required for transferability.

A = 90 - 100
B = 80 - 89
C = 70 - 79
D = 60 - 69
F =   0 - 59


Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Identify early childhood classroom practices that create an anti-bias atmosphere. (NAEYC 1c, 4a)
  2. Identify characteristics of an anti-bias curriculum for young children, including practices and materials. (NAEYC 2b, 4a)
  3. Identify both ethnic and structural diversity in U.S. families and examine suggestions on dealing with the implications that result from such diversity. (NAEYC 2a, 2b, 2c)
  4. Identify personal strengths and weaknesses on diversity issues and determine strategies for improvement for students who are seeking to broaden their experiences and knowledge. (NAEYC 6d)
