CPT 170 - Microcomputer Applications Lecture Hours: 3 Credits: 3
Description: This course introduces microcomputer applications software, including word processing, databases, spreadsheets, graphs, and their integration.
Prerequisite(s): Take ENG 032 , MAT 100 and RDG 100 with a minimum grade of C. Course Topics:
- The history of the PC
- Differences among laptop, tablet, desktop and server computers
- General categories of software programs and applications
- How operating system software interacts with applications and hardware
- Digital security risks and cybercrime
- Types of internet and network attacks
- Preventing unauthorized computer access and use
- Network basics
- Getting started with Windows OS
- File management
- Cloud computer and file sharing
- Word, Excel, PowerPoint
- Using email in a professional setting
Textbooks: Textbook information can be found on the Book Inn website Required Materials:
- Computer with internet access
- Google Chrome, Java and anti-virus software
- Microsoft Office 365
- OneDrive account
- Access to the college’s portal
Grading System: An overall grade of C or higher is required for transferability.
A = 90 - 100
B = 80 - 89
C = 70 - 79
D = 60 - 69
F = 0 - 59 Student Learning Outcomes:
- Demonstrate basic computer concepts.
- Demonstrate basic features and uses of the Windows operating system.
- Create common business documents utilizing current Microsoft Office applications.
- Enter and edit data, work with cell references, effectively use formulas and functions and create and edit charts in an electronic spreadsheet.
- Apply current technology to protect digital information.
