BIO 110 - General Anatomy and Physiology


Lecture Hours: 3 Lab Hours: 0 Credits: 3

Description: This course is the first in a sequence of courses, including intensive coverage of the body as an integrated whole.  All body systems are studied.  The following topics are covered: chemical basis of life, cell, tissues, skeleton, cardiovascular, digestive, urinary, immune, respiratory systems, and integument.

  • Integumentary system
  • Skeletal system use, medical terminology related to the skeletal system
  • Muscular system use, medical terminology related to the muscular system
  • Nervous system
  • Endocrine system
  • Cardiovascular system - blood
  • Cardiovascular system - heart and vessels
  • Lymphatic system
  • Respiratory system
  • Digestive system
  • Excretory/urinary system
  • Male reproductive system
  • Female reproductive system

Grading System:
An overall grade of C or higher is required for transferability.

A = 90 - 100
B = 80 - 89
C = 70 - 79
D = 60 - 69
F =   0 - 59


Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Define and describe key concepts in anatomy and physiology such as anatomy, physiology, pathology, homeostasis, negative feedback, positive feedback, disease, predisposing factors, signs, symptoms, pain, and inflammation.
  2. Describe the structure and function of the integumentary system including the histology of the skin, glands, hair, and nails, as well as the skin’s response to injury, burns, diagnostic tests, and different forms of skin cancer.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of the skeletal system by using medical terminology, distinguishing between axial and appendicular skeletons, describing bone tissue, anatomy of long bones.
  4. Describe the components of blood, plasma constituents, formed elements, mechanisms for controlling bleeding, blood clotting pathways, ABO and Rh blood types, blood transfusion compatibility, functions of blood, common diagnostic blood tests, and disorders of the cardiovascular system related to blood.
