MTH 139 - Anatomy and Physiology for Massage Therapy III


Lecture Hours: 2 Lab Hours: 0 Credits: 2

Description: This course is a study of the effects of massage on the sympathetic/parasympathetic divisions and the release of neurotransmitters and hormones.

Prerequisite(s): MTH 122 , MTH 123 , MTH 136 , and MTH 138 .
Course Topics:
  • Introduction of the endocrine system, terms, pathologies; as massage relates
  • Introduction of the digestive system, terms, pathologies; as massage relates
  • Introduction of the urinary system, terms, pathologies; as massage relates
  • Introduction of the reproductive system, terms, pathologies; as massage relates
  • Introduction to factors involving client safety with evidence-based indications and contraindications for massage relative to these systems
  • Develop treatment plans for clients in relation to these body systems
  • Understand the bodies resistance to disease
  • Understand immune dysfunctions
  • Build critical thinking skills and use case scenarios for practice

Grading System:
An overall grade of C or higher is required for transferability.

B =   80 - 89
C =   70 - 79
D =   60 - 69
F =     0 - 59


Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Demonstrate professional responsibility and adherence to ethical principles.
  2. Speak publicly, listen actively, and respond effectively.
  3. Identify common evidence-based indications and contraindications for massage and discuss the benefits of massage with clients.
  4. Demonstrate active listening and critical thinking skills in interviewing and determining an appropriate treatment plan for a client.
  5. Provide a professional and effective relaxation massage using classic (Swedish) techniques, demonstrate the appropriate application of deep tissue massage.
