DMS 101 - Ultrasound Physics and Instrumentation I


Lecture Hours: 2 Credits: 2

Description: This course is a study of fundamental principles of acoustic physics including sound waves, sound wave propagation, sound wave interactions, image production, ultrasound transducers, transducer arrays, transducer operation, imaging modes, and biological effects.

Course Topics:
  • Principles of physics and sound waves, and sound propagation. Interaction of sound and matter. 
  • Transducer and instrument technology.
  • Sonographer operator controls and image processing and production.

Required Materials:
  • Windows based computer with internet access. 

Grading System:
An overall grade of C or higher is required for transferability.

A = 90 - 100
B = 80 - 89
C = 70 - 79
D = 60 - 69
F =   0 - 59


Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Describe biological effects.
  2. Describe sound waves, principles of sound production, propagation of ultrasound
  3. through tissue, reflection, refraction, and scattering.
  4. Describe interaction of sound and matter.
  5. Describe instrument options, transducer technology and selection, and explain the
  6. advantages and limitations of the various types.
  7. Describe the principles of medical ultrasound equipment, including modes of operation, operator control options, and image processing.
  8. Describe image production and optimization.
