PHY 118 - Medical Imaging Science

Lecture Hours: 3 Credits: 3

Description: This course is the study of the fundamental physics associated with the field of medical imaging sciences. The areas of study include concepts of radiation production as it relates to x rays and nuclear medicine studies and acoustical properties related to sonographic exams.

Prerequisite(s): BIO 112  and MAT 110
Course Topics:
  • Understanding Radiation Production: Students will gain in-depth knowledge of the principles of radiation production, including the generation of X-rays. This knowledge is essential for interpreting medical images and understanding the functioning of imaging equipment.
  • Nuclear Medicine Studies: The course will cover the fundamentals of nuclear medicine, including the use of radioactive materials in medical imaging. This is a critical component of modern medical diagnostics and treatment.
  • Acoustical Properties in Sonography: Students will learn about the acoustical properties that underlie sonographic exams. This knowledge is vital for understanding how ultrasound technology produces images and how to interpret them.
  • Radiation Safety and Ethics: Emphasis will be placed on radiation safety protocols and ethical considerations in medical imaging. Students will be prepared to uphold the highest standards of patient care and safety.

Textbooks:
Textbook information can be found on the Book Inn website
