DMS 117 - Gynecology Lecture Hours: 2 Credits: 2
Description: This course is the study of anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the female reproductive system with emphasis on sonographic imaging methods and procedures.
Course Topics:
- Medical ethics, law, infection control, communication, and patient care as it relates to sonography Ergonomic techniques
- Sonography of the female pelvis
- Anatomy, relational anatomy, laboratory values, and pathology of the female pelvis
- Biological effects of sonography
Textbooks: Textbook information can be found on the Book Inn website Required Materials:
- Windows based computer with internet access.
Grading System: An overall grade of C or higher is required for transferability and to continue in the Radiologic Technology Program.
A = 90 - 100
B = 80 - 89
C = 70 - 79
D = 60 - 69
F = 0 - 59 Student Learning Outcomes:
- Describe types and methods of infection control, standard precautions, modes of transmission of infection and disease, standard precautions, isolation procedure, preventative methods and transducer sanitation and disinfection.
- Describe ergonomic techniques and awareness of work-related musculoskeletal injuries and best practices for prevention.
- Describe medical and sonographic terminology.
- Describe processes for obtaining patient history and relevant information related to sonographic examinations.
- Identify sectional anatomy, relational anatomy, anatomic variants, and sonographic appearances of normal anatomical structures.
- Describe pathology, physiology, pathophysiology, sonographic technique, measurements, sonographic appearances, and Doppler patterns in gynecologic disease processes.
- Describe the application of image production and optimization.
- Describe biological effects.
- Describe scanning protocol and modification(s) based on the sonographic findings and the differential diagnoses.
- Describe the process of correlating diagnostic and imaging procedures, including prior exams, and varying modalities.
- Describe laboratory value relevance and correlate laboratory values and clinical indications for sonographic exam.
- Describe the role of the sonographer in performing interventional/invasive/advanced procedures.
