BUS 121 - Business Law I


Lecture Hours: 3 Credits: 3

Description: This course is a study of legal procedures, law and society, classifications and systems of law, the tribunals administering justice and their actions, contracts, sales, transfer of titles, rights and duties of the parties, conditions, and warranties.

Prerequisite(s): Take ENG 100 MAT 100 , and RDG 100  with a minimum grade of C.
Course Topics:
  • History and current legal process of the American Justice System
  • Torts, which torts affect businesses, and different types of remedies available
  • Elements needed to form a contract
  • Breach of contract and the types of remedies available
  • Basics of the criminal justice system
  • Laws that protect consumers’ rights
  • Overview of employment law
  • Different forms of business structures

Grading System:
An overall grade of C or higher is required for transferability.

A = 90 - 100
B = 80 - 89
C = 70 - 79
D = 60 - 69
F =   0 - 59


Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Analyze the American legal system and its impact on business.
  2. Evaluate civil law issues affecting businesses, including torts, contracts, and remedies available to impacted parties.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of laws protecting individuals in the marketplace, including consumer protection regulations and the legal dimensions of employer-employee and agency relationships.
  4. Explain the legal considerations involved in forming and operating a business, including business structures.
