DHM 171 - Introduction to Heavy Equipment Welding


Lecture Hours: 2 Lab Hours: 3 Credits: 3

Description: This course introduces the proper welding techniques utilized to alter a sub-frame, alter a unit, or add equipment to improve payload space, safety, or location.

Prerequisite(s): Take DHM 159  or CWE 113  and DHM 173 
Course Topics:
  • Alteration of sub-frames
  • Add equipment to improve payload space, safety, or location
  • Various welding processes

Grading System:
An overall grade of C or higher is required for transferability.

A =  90 - 100
B =   80 - 89
C =   70 - 79
D =   60 - 69
F =     0 - 59


Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Identify the OSHA standards for safety and PPE requirements for metal fabrication tool and equipment use.
  2. Apply measurements and proper layout techniques to metal fabrication.
  3. Demonstrate the proper set up and use of welding equipment in the SMAW welding process.
  4. Demonstrate the proper set up and use of welding equipment in the MIG welding process.
  5. Demonstrate the proper set up and use of an Oxy-Acetylene Torch to cut carbon steel.
