DMS 124 - OB/GYN Sonography II Lecture Hours: 2 Credits: 2
Description: This course is an advanced study of the gynecological pathologic processes, including fetal anomalies/abnormalities and advanced fetal gestational age testing.
Prerequisite(s): DMS 112 , DMS 114 , DMS 125 , and DMS 160 . Course Topics:
- Medical ethics, law, infection control, communication and patient care as it relates to sonography Ergonomic techniques
- Sonography of the female pelvis and gravid uterus in the first, second and third trimester Anatomy, relational anatomy, laboratory values and pathology of the female pelvis and fetus Biological effects of sonography, prudent use and ALARA
- Invasive techniques and procedures in OB/GYN sonography
- Laboratory values as the relate to OB/GYN sonography

- Windows based computer with Internet access.
Grading System: An overall grade of C or higher is required for transferability.
A = 90 - 100
B = 80 - 89
C = 70 - 79
D = 60 - 69
F = 0 - 59 Student Learning Outcomes:
- Describe types and methods of infection control, standard precautions, modes of transmission of infection and disease, standard precautions, isolation procedure, preventative methods and transducer sanitation and disinfection.
- Describe ergonomic techniques and awareness of work-related musculoskeletal injuries and best practices for prevention.
- Describe medical and sonographic terminology.
- Describe processes for obtaining patient history and relevant information related to sonographic examinations.
- Identify anatomy, anatomic variants, and sonographic appearances of normal maternal, embryonic, and fetal anatomic structures during the first, second, and third trimesters.
- Describe pathology, physiology, pathophysiology, sonographic technique, measurements, sonographic appearances, and Doppler patterns in obstetric abnormalities.
- Describe the application of image production and optimization.
- Describe scanning protocol and modification(s) based on the sonographic findings and the differential diagnoses.
- Describe the process of correlating diagnostic and imaging procedures, including prior exams, and varying modalities.
- Describe laboratory value relevance and correlate laboratory values and clinical indications for sonographic exam.
- Describe the role of the sonographer in performing interventional/invasive/advanced procedures.
- Identify the responsibilities and role of the Sonographer and describe their scope of practice according to the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography and American Institute Ultrasound in Medicine.
- Describe biological effects and ALARA according to the AIUM and SDMS.
