DMS 160 - Clinical Applications II


Lab Hours: 21 Credits: 7

Description: This course covers routine sonography procedures in the clinical environment.

Prerequisite(s): DMS 102 DMS 116 , and DMS 150 .
Course Topics:
  • Medical ethics, law, infection control, communication and patient care as it relates to sonography Ergonomic techniques
  • Sonography of the female pelvis and gravid uterus in the first, second and third trimester
  • Anatomy, relational anatomy, laboratory values and pathology of the female pelvis and fetus Biological effects of sonography

Required Materials:
  • Windows based computer with Internet access.

Grading System:
An overall grade of C or higher is required for transferability and to continue in the Radiologic Technology Program.

A = 90 - 100
B = 80 - 89
C = 70 - 79
D = 60 - 69
F =   0 - 59


Student Learning Outcomes:
1. Demonstrate application of ergonomic techniques.
2. Demonstrate application of infection control, standard precautions, isolation procedure, preventative methods and transducer sanitation and disinfection.
3. Demonstrate application of patient care both inside and outside the sonography department.
4. Demonstrate ability to effectively communicate and collaborate in the healthcare environment.
5. Demonstrate medical ethics while in the clinic setting.
6. Demonstrate the application of image production and optimization.
7. Demonstrate practice of the ALARA principle while in the clinic setting.
8. Demonstrate application of image production and optimization.
9. Demonstrate sonographic technique, measurements, sonographic appearances, and Doppler patterns, where applicable, in both normal and abnormal structures.
10. Demonstrate scanning protocol and modification(s) based on the sonographic findings and the differential diagnoses.
11. Demonstrate clinical competency through the performance of sonographic examinations.
12. Define resources for professional development including recent developments in sonography, professional journals and research statistics and design.
