DMS 102 - Ultrasound Physics and Instrumentation II


Lecture Hours: 3 Credits: 3

Description: This course is an advanced study of the fundamental principles of acoustic physics and ultrasound instrumentation to include a discussion of the major components of the ultrasound system, Doppler, spectral analysis, color-flow Doppler, color Doppler energy, ultrasound artifacts, and quality assurance, and new technology.

Prerequisite(s): DMS 101 , DMS 104 DMS 105 , DMS 117 , and DMS 164 
Course Topics:
  • Principles of physics and sound waves, and sound propagation. Interaction of sound and matter.
  • Transducer and instrument technology.
  • Sonographer operator controls and image processing and production Biological effects and ALARA
  • Quality control and improvement
  • Doppler principles and hemodynamics
  • Emerging technologies in the field of sonography

  • Windows based computer with Internet access.

Grading System:
An overall grade of C or higher is required for transferability.

A = 90 - 100
B = 80 - 89
C = 70 - 79
D = 60 - 69
F =   0 - 59

4.    Describe acoustic artifacts and methods to minimize or eliminate them.
5.    Describe the physics of Doppler, principles of doppler techniques and methods of doppler flow analysis.
6.    Describe hemodynamics of blood flow.
7.    Describe concepts and techniques for contrast-enhanced imaging.
8.    Describe emerging technologies in the field of sonography.
9.    Describe Image storage devices.
