DMS 150 - Clinical Applications I Clinical Hours: 21 Credits: 7
Description: This course is an introduction to the diagnostic ultrasound department, including initial examination performances, machine operation, and administrative/record keeping procedures.
Prerequisite(s): DMS 101 , DMS 104 , DMS 105 , DMS 117 , and DMS 164 with a minimum grade of a C or higher. Course Topics:
- Medical ethics, law, infection control, communication and patient care as it relates to sonography Ergonomic techniques
- Sonography of the abdomen and small parts
- Anatomy, relational anatomy, laboratory values and pathology of the abdomen and small parts Sonographic invasive procedures
- Biological effects of sonography
Textbooks: Textbook information can be found on the Book Inn website Required Materials:
- Windows based computer with Internet access.
Grading System: An overall grade of C or higher is required for transferability.
A = 90 - 100
B = 80 - 89
C = 70 - 79
D = 60 - 69
F = 0 - 59 Student Learning Outcomes:
- Demonstrate application of ergonomic techniques.
- Demonstrate application of infection control, standard precautions, isolation procedure, preventative methods and transducer sanitation and disinfection.
- Demonstrate application of patient care both inside and outside the sonography department.
- Demonstrate ability to effectively communicate and collaborate in the healthcare environment.
- Demonstrate medical ethics while in the clinic setting.
- Demonstrate the application of image production and optimization.
- Demonstrate practice of the ALARA principle while in the clinic setting.
- Demonstrate application of image production and optimization.
- Demonstrate sonographic technique, measurements, sonographic appearances, and Doppler patterns, where applicable, in both normal and abnormal structures.
- Demonstrate scanning protocol and modification(s) based on the sonographic findings and the differential diagnoses.
- Demonstrate clinical competency through the performance of sonographic examinations.
- Define resources for professional development including research statistics and design.
