ENG 207 - Literature for Children Lecture Hours: 3 Credits: 3
Description: This course provides an introduction to children’s literature in America through an examination of picture books & novels that depict Americans of various backgrounds and experiences. It focuses on defining quality in children’s book writing & illustration, and assessing concerns in the field.
Prerequisite(s): Take ENG 102 with a minimum grade of a C. Course Topics:
- Components of Children’s Literature
- Genre Studies
- Book Analysis (Setting, Subjects, Illustrations, Audience) Cultural and Historical Issues
- Children’s Literacy
- Oral and Multimedia
- Critical Thinking
- MLA Guidelines for Research
Textbooks: Textbook information can be found on the Chaser’s Bark Shop website.
Required Materials:
- Computer with internet access
- Microsoft Office 365
- OneDrive account
- Access to the college’s portal
- Ability to format papers as .docs, .doc, .rtf, or .html
Grading System: An overall grade of C or higher is required for transferability.
A = 90 - 100
B = 80 - 89
C = 70 - 79
D = 60 - 69
F = 0 - 59 Student Learning Outcomes: • Connect themes to social and cultural issues that impact learning, literacy, and enjoyment of a variety of children’s literature.
• Identify, assess, and select books in appropriate literary genres written for children.
• Explain how literature promotes physical, emotional, social, intellectual, and aesthetic growth.
• Evaluate contemporary and historical literature in the context of the period in which they were written or set.
