BIO 210 - Anatomy & Physiology I

Description: This is the first in a sequence of courses, including an intensive coverage of the body as an integrated whole. All body systems are studied.

Prerequisite(s): Take MAT 101 or MAT 152 or MAT 103, and ENG 100, RDG 100 and (BIO 100 or High School Biology) with a minimum grade of C.

Course Topics:

Anatomical terminology describing body regions, body planes, and directional references
Homeostasis, negative and positive feedback
Chemical level of organization
Cellular and tissue level of organization
Metabolism and energetics
Structure and function of the integumentary system
Structure and function of the skeletal system
Structure and function of the muscular system
Structure and function of the nervous system
Structure and function of the special senses

Required Materials:

Grading System:
An overall grade of C or higher is required for transferability.

A = 90 - 100
B = 80 - 89
C = 70 - 79
D = 60 - 69
F = 0 - 59

Student Learning Outcomes:

Identify and describe the structure and function of cells and tissues, including the role of cellular metabolism in maintaining normal body function.
Identify the major components of the skeletal system, including bone tissue and joints, with an emphasis on the functions of movement, support, and protection.
Identify and explain the structure and function of the muscular system, including the mechanisms of muscle contraction.
Identify and describe the levels of organization of the human body and explain the principles of homeostasis, including basic chemistry concepts and terminology.
Compare and contrast the autonomic and somatic nervous systems.
Explain the role of the general and special senses in the nervous system.
