WLD 228 - Inert Gas Welding Pipe I

Description: This course covers the techniques used in gas tungsten arc welding of groove welds on ferrous pipe.

Prerequisite(s): Take WLD 132 
Course Topics:
  • Plasma Pipe Beveling Operation
  • GTAW Root, Hot Pass, Fillers, and Cover Pass on 4” SCH 40 Carbon Steel Pipe
  • 2G, 5G, and 6G Welding Positions

  • Tip Cleaners
  • Short TIG Gloves
  • 14” Half-Round File

Grading System:
An overall grade of C or higher is required for transferability.

A = 90 - 100
B = 80 - 89
C = 70 - 79
D = 60 - 69
F =   0 - 59


Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Recognize and properly set up welding equipment to demonstrate the GTAW welding process.
  2. Demonstrate GTAW welding Process on 4” carbon steel pipe by properly welding a root pass with and open butt fit up.
  3. Demonstrate a proper GTAW hot pass on 8” carbon steel pipe.
  4. Demonstrate proper multiple GTAW filler passes on 4” carbon steel pipe.
  5. Complete proper GTAW processes using ER7OS to weld 4” carbon steel pipe coupons in the 2G, 5G, and 6G positions to AWS standards.
