DHM 173 - Electrical Systems I


Lecture Hours: 2 Lab Hours: 3 Credits: 3

Description: This course is a study of basic electrical theory as applied to truck and heavy equipment batteries, starters, and alternators.

Grading System:
An overall grade of C or higher is required for transferability.

A = 90 - 100
B = 80 - 89
C = 70 - 79
D = 60 - 69
F =   0 - 59


Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Identify the operation and maintenance of the diesel engine cranking and charging system components.
  2. Apply Ohm’s Law as it relates to electrical circuit measurements.
  3. Interpret electrical circuit wiring symbols and diagrams.
  4. Record accurate resistance, voltage, and amperage measurements using a Digital Volt & Ohm Meter.
  5. Perform diagnostic and replacement procedures for the charging and starting system components.
