DMS 116 - Abdominal Ultrasound


Lecture Hours: 4 Credits: 4

Description: This course is an in-depth study of abdominal ultrasound including anatomy, physiology, and pathology. The sonographic appearance of normal anatomical structures and the more common abnormalities affecting the abdomen are also discussed.

Prerequisite(s): Take DMS 101 , DMS 104 DMS 105 DMS 117 , and DMS 164  with a minimum grade of C.
Course Topics:
  • Medical ethics, law, infection control, communication and patient care as it relates to sonography Ergonomic techniques
  • Sonography of the abdomen and small parts
  • Anatomy, relational anatomy, laboratory values and pathology of the abdomen and small parts Sonographic invasive procedures 
  • Biological effects of sonography

Required Materials:
  • Windows based computer with internet access

Grading System:
An overall grade of C or higher is required for transferability.

A = 90 - 100
B = 80 - 89
C = 70 - 79
D = 60 - 69
F =   0 - 59


Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Describe patient care inside and outside the sonography department.
  2. Describe medical ethics and law, HIPAA, and OSHA guidelines.
  3. Describe types and methods of infection control, standard precautions, modes of transmission of infection and disease, standard precautions, isolation procedure, preventative methods and transducer sanitation and disinfection.
  4. Describe ergonomic techniques and awareness of work-related musculoskeletal injuries and best practices for prevention.
  5. Describe medical and sonographic terminology.
  6. Describe processes for obtaining patient history and relevant information related to sonographic examinations.
  7. Identify sectional anatomy, relational anatomy, anatomic variants, and sonographic appearances of normal anatomical structures.
  8. Describe disease processes with application to sonographic and Doppler patterns.
  9. Describe physiology, pathophysiology, sonographic technique, measurements, sonographic appearances, and Doppler patterns, where applicable, in both normal and abnormal structures.
  10. Describe the application of image production and optimization.
  11. Describe biological effects.
  12. Describe scanning protocol and modification(s) based on the sonographic findings and the differential diagnoses.
  13. Describe process for correlating diagnostic and imaging procedures, including prior exams, and varying modalities.
  14. Describe laboratory value relevance and correlate laboratory values and clinical indications for sonographic exam.
  15. Describe sonographic guided procedures.
