CPT 298 - Intro to Software as a Service


Lecture Hours: 3 Credits: 3

Description: This course introduces Software as a Service (SaaS) as it pertains to cloud computing technologies. Topics include installing various environment configurations on multiple computing system platforms and developing and deploying software applications in a cloud environment.

Prerequisite(s): Take CPT 209  and CPT 168  with a minimum grade of C.
Course Topics:
  • Introduction to SaaS Concepts (Multi-tenancy, Scalability)
  • Cloud Platform Proficiency (AWS, Azure, GCP)
  • SaaS Application Development and Deployment 
  • Development Environment Configuration (Across Multiple OS) 
  • Version Control with Git (Branching, Merging, Pull Requests)
  • CI/CD Pipeline Design and Implementation (Jenkins, GitHub Actions)
  • Cloud Data Management (Databases, Storage Solutions)
  • Serverless Computing (AWS Lambda, Azure Functions)
  • Collaboration Using Version Control and Cloud Tools

Required Materials:
  • Computer with Internet Access, Google Chrome browser, Java, and anti-virus software. 
  • Microsoft Office Professional Edition (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, OneNote). This software is available to SCC students at no cost through Microsoft Office 365.
  • OneDrive account
  • Access to the college’s portal

Grading System:
An overall grade of C or higher is required for transferability.

A = 90 - 100
B = 80 - 89
C = 70 - 79
D = 60 - 69
F =   0 - 59


Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Describe and apply key SaaS concepts by developing, deploying, and managing a complete SaaS application on a cloud platform that meets all functional requirements.
  2. Use cloud platforms to set up and manage virtual machines, storage, networking, and serverless applications. 
  3. Design, implement, and manage tools that automate software testing and deployment processes to ensure reliable and efficient application delivery. 
  4. Demonstrate the ability to configure development environments across multiple operating systems and manage code versions using Git. 
  5. Collaborate in team-based projects, utilizing version control systems and cloud tools, while demonstrating the essential skills required for success.
