EGR 260 - Engineering Statics


Lecture Hours: 2 Lab Hours: 3 Credits: 3

Description: This course is an introduction to the principles of engineering mechanics as applied to forces and force systems. The techniques of vector mathematics are employed.

Prerequisite(s): Take PHY 221  with a minimum grade of C.
Course Topics:
  • Fundamental principles used in the study of mechanics
  • Magnitude and direction of forces and moments and associated scalar and vector products
  • Free body diagrams for two- and three-dimensional force systems
  • Equations of static equilibrium
  • Moments of force about a specified point or line
  • Forces and couples acting on a variety of objects
  • Unknown forces and couples acting on objects in equilibrium
  • Centroid and center-of-mass for a system of discrete particles and for objects of arbitrary shape
  • Structures with a distributed load
  • Moment of inertia for lines, areas, and volumes
  • Equilibrium of rigid bodies subjected to a system of forces and moments that include friction
  • Dry sliding friction, i.e. wedges and belts

Grading System:
An overall grade of C or higher is required for transferability.

A = 90 - 100
B = 80 - 89
C = 70 - 79
D = 60 - 69
F =   0 - 59


Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Create free-body diagrams to analyze the statics of rigid bodies. 
  2. Formulate solutions using the fundamental equations of static equilibrium.
  3. Construct an equivalent simplified system from a system of forces and moments.
  4. Use Excel to solve static equilibrium problems (i.e. goal seek, solver, and matrix math).
