PHM 173 - Pharmacy Technician Practicum III


Lab Hours: 9 Credits: 3

Description: This course includes practical experience in a working pharmacy environment.

Prerequisite(s):  Take PHM 101 , PHM 110 , PHM 112 , PHM 113 , PHM 114 , and PHM 124  with a minimum grade of C. 
Corequisite(s): Take PHM 175 
Course Topics:
  • Professional behaviors and ethical conduct of a pharmacy technician
  • Processing and Handling of Medications and Medication Orders
  • Patient Care, Quality, and Safety Knowledge and Skills
  • Regulatory and Compliance Knowledge and Skills

Required Materials:
  • Basic 4-function calculator
  • Pen with black or blue ink
  • Lab jacket with program patch
  • Clinical uniform with program patch
  • Current SCC ID

Grading System:
An overall grade of C or higher is required for transferability.

A = 90 - 100
B = 80 - 89
C = 70 - 79
D = 60 - 69
F =   0 - 59


Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Demonstrate professional behaviors and ethical conduct in all job-related activities.
  2. Accurately receive, process, and prepare products, prescriptions, and medication orders that are safe for patient use.
  3. Collect, organize, and record demographic and clinical information to assist pharmacists in the monitoring of medication therapy.
  4. Identify patients who desire/require counseling to optimize the use of medications, equipment, and devices.
  5. Store and prepare a variety of medication products, including those requiring special handling and documentation in compliance with USP standards.
  6. Use current technology to ensure accuracy of medication dispensing.
  7. Demonstrate patient-safety and medication-safety practices.
  8. Assist pharmacists in the medication reconciliation process.
  9. Demonstrate point-of-care testing.
  10. Understands state and federal laws and regulations to pharmacy technician.
