EDU 242 - Adolescent Growth and Development Lecture Hours: 3 Credits: 3
Description: This course is an investigation of the various patterns and theories related to intellectual, social, emotional, and physical growth and development of preadolescent and adolescent learners. Emphasis is placed on developmental applications in educational settings.
Prerequisite(s): Take ENG 100 , RDG 100 , and MAT 100 with a minimum grade of C. Corequisite(s): Take EDU 230 with a minimum grade of C. Course Topics:
- Overview of adolescence as a developmental stage, historical and cultural perspectives on adolescence, theories of human development (Erikson, Piaget, Vygotsky, Bronfenbrenner, etc.), research methods in developmental psychology, implications for teaching and learning.
- Puberty and physical changes, adolescent brain development and neuroplasticity, sleep, nutrition, and health behaviors, body image and self-concept Implications for classroom management and learning.
- Cognitive growth and abstract thinking (Piaget’s formal operations, information processing) Adolescent reasoning, decision-making, and problem-solving Moral reasoning (Kohlberg, Gilligan) Motivation and metacognition Applying cognitive development principles to lesson planning.
- Identity formation (Erikson, Marcia) Peer relationships, friendship, and social networks Family relationships and parenting styles Emotional regulation, empathy, and resilience Supporting positive classroom climate and relationships.
- The role of culture, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status in development Gender identity and expression Media, technology, and social media impacts School, community, and societal influences Culturally responsive teaching and equity in adolescent education.
- Common mental health issues (e.g., anxiety, depression, stress, trauma) Risk-taking behaviors and prevention strategies School-based supports and referral processes Promoting resilience and well-being through SEL (Social Emotional Learning) Teacher roles in supporting mental health.
- Translating developmental research into instructional strategies Designing developmentally appropriate learning experiences Classroom management based on developmental understanding Observation, assessment, and reflection on adolescent learners Professional ethics and teacher-student boundaries.

- Evaluate the impact of adolescent brain development on decision-making, risk-taking, and learning processes. Identify strategies to promote positive adolescent mental health and social-emotional competence within the classroom context.
- Demonstrate understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion in adolescent development, including gender, culture, language, and ability.
