SCC Online Course Policies


Identity Verification

The college issues each student a unique username to access the student information portal, learning management system, e-mail, and other electronic student resources. Upon first login, students are required to set a secure password for their account. Students accept responsibility for the security of their personal passwords and should change their passwords on demand to maintain security. Multi-factor authentication is used as an additional security precaution. If a student believes that their account has been compromised or misused, the student should immediately notify the IT Help Desk. Additional ID verification systems may be utilized as technology options evolve. Students will be notified of any associated costs that may arise.

Mandatory Online Course Attendance 

Students must have logged into and actively participated in the online course by the end of the drop/add period, as indicated by posting to an online discussion, submitting an assignment, taking an assessment, communicating with the instructor, or completing other activities as designated by the instructor. Students who fail to meet this attendance requirement by the end of the drop/add period will be dropped from the class by the instructor. 

Proctored Exams 

Course instructors may require proctored testing via an online proctoring service, such as Honorlock.There is currently no charge for this service. Students taking proctored tests must present a picture ID prior to beginning the test and may be subject to video recording or surveillance during testing. Students testing through an online proctoring service are expected to take their tests in a quiet environment away from other people and distractions, free of all electronic devices other than the testing device. Students with technical challenges at their off-campus location can arrange with the instructor to take a proctored test on-campus in the SCC Testing Center or another approved proctored testing site. 

SCCOnline Orientation and Support

SCCOnline offers the Online Learning Tutorial which provides an orientation to online courses and training for the student tools in D2L Brightspace, the college’s learning management system. The Online Learning Tutorial is available 24/7 from the course list in each student’s D2L account. Additional support for D2L Brightspace and online courses is available by clicking on the Help menus in D2L, on the SCCOnline webpage, by email at SCCOnline@sccsc.edu, or by phone at (864) 592-4961 or toll free (888) 364-9080.

Technical Requirements for Online, Hybrid, Synchronous, and Flex Courses

(These are course section numbers ending in N, H, S or F): 

  • Access to a reliable computer with Windows (10 or 11), Mac OS X (11, 12, or 13), or Chromebook with current updates
  • High-speed internet service (such as cable, DSL, or cellular data plan)
  • Current version of Google Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge (Windows) or Safari (Mac only) web browser recommended.
  • Microsoft Office (free download from MySCC portal)
  • Microsoft Teams or Zoom (instructor will specify for synchronous and flex courses)
  • Antivirus/security software with weekly updates
  • Speakers or headphones
  • Webcam (built-in or USB external)
  • Additional software as specified in the syllabus or instructor addendum

Students in Synchronous or Flex courses are encouraged to use a USB headset microphone during live video meetings. The built-in microphones in most computers are subject to feedback and background noise that can be disruptive to the other participants. The Book Inn sells webcams, headsets, and other technology that students may need.

Check D2L Brightspace web browser compatibility

Some courses may also require a webcam for student presentations or other software specified in the course syllabus. Since most instructors do not accept technical problems as an excuse for missed deadlines, students should also have a backup plan for logging into courses in case of trouble. 

Students must have a Windows, Mac, or Chromebook with Internet service to complete all course requirements. Smartphones and tablets are helpful as secondary devices to keep up with courses on the go, but not all course materials, website links, assignments, or tests are fully compatible. Smartphones should not be used for online tests, due to the small screen size.

Students must have a working webcam and microphone to complete multimedia assignments, class presentations, and online proctored tests. Students in Synchronous or Flex courses are encouraged to use a USB headset microphone during live video meetings.
