EEM 221 - DC/AC Drives


Lecture Hours: 2 Lab Hours: 3 Credits: 3

Description: This course covers the principles of operation and application of DC drives and AC drives.

Prerequisite(s): Take EEM 201  and EEM 211 
Course Topics:
  • AC & DC drive characteristics
  • Analyze various Drive schematics
  • Test Drive circuits
  • Identify factors that contribute to drive failure

Required Materials:
CAMIT Basic Toolkit which is normally purchased for EEM 117 .
Grading System:
A =  90 - 100
B =   80 - 89
C =   70 - 79
D =   60 - 69
F =     0 - 59
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Identify and demonstrate proper electrical and mechanical safety precautions and procedures while working with AC/DC drives.
  2. Measure motor current and voltage in a lab environment using DMM and ammeter.
  3. Compare voltage in and voltage out on AC/DC drives.
  4. Describe the basic operation of DC drives from controlling/powering a DC drive and demonstrate DC drive operation in the lab.
  5. Describe the basic operation of AC drives from controlling/powering an AC drive and demonstrate AC drive operation in the lab.
  6. Explain proper steps and demonstrate proper troubleshooting techniques and methods for AC/DC drives.
