IST 257 - LAN Network Server Technologies


Lecture Hours: 3 Credits: 3

Description: This course is a study of network operating system technologies including network operating system architecture, the installation, configuration, monitoring and troubleshooting of network resources, and network administration functions such as user/group maintenance, network security, print services, print services, remote access, fault tolerance, backup and recovery.

Prerequisite(s): Take IST 166  and CPT 209  with a minimum grade of C.
Course Topics:
  • Successfully installing and configuring server software in a virtual environment.
  • Installing, configuring, and managing Active Directory, DNS, DHCP and IIS
  • Using monitoring tools to evaluate server performance
  • Managing system reliability and availability

Required Materials:
  • Server 2012 Operating System DVD or ISO file
    A DVD comes shrink-wrapped with textbook if purchased in SCC Book Inn
  • One USB Flash drive - bring to class every day!

Grading System:
An overall grade of C or higher is required for transferability.

A =  90 - 100
B =   80 - 89
C =   70 - 79
D =   60 - 69
F =     0 - 59


Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Compare server operating systems.
  2. Recognize what is involved in the preparation for and install of server operating systems.
  3. Demonstrate understanding of primary roles in Server 2012.
  4. Configure and manage data storage.
  5. Identify ways to monitor and analyze the server environment.
