MAT 242 - Differential Equations Lecture Hours: 4 Credits: 4
Description: This course includes the following topics: solution of linear and elementary non-linear differential equations by standard methods with sufficient linear algebra to solve systems; applications; series; Laplace transform; and numerical methods. (Prerequisite: Analytic Geometry and Calculus III)
Prerequisite(s): Take MAT 141 with a minimum grade of C. Course Topics:
- Introduction to Differential Equations
- First-Order Differential Equations
- Mathematical Models and Numerical Methods Involving First-Order Equations
- Linear Second-Order Equations
- Laplace Transforms
- Series Solutions of Differential Equations
- Matrix Methods for Linear Systems
- Eigenvalue Problems and Sturm-Liouville Equation
Textbooks: Textbook information can be found on the Book Inn website Required Materials:
- Texas Instruments TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator.
- Any other device must be approved by the instructor of the course.
Grading System: An overall grade of C or higher is required for transferability.
A = 90 - 100
B = 80 - 89
C = 70 - 79
D = 60 - 69
F = 0 - 59 Student Learning Outcomes:
- Solve problems by determining if a given function is a solution.
- Solve differential equations by separable, linear, or exact equations methods.
- Solve application problems using first-order differential equations.
- Solve a differential equation by improved Euler’s method, Taylor, or Runge-Kutta methods.
- Solve second-order equations using homogeneous, non-homogeneous, or the method of undetermined coefficients strategies.
