PHS 102 - Physical Science II Lecture Hours: 3 Lab Hours: 3 Credits: 4
Description: This is a continuation of the introduction to physical science with emphasis on science terminology and investigations of the physical world. Topics are selected from astronomy, chemistry, geology, and physics.
Prerequisite(s): Take PHS 101 with a minimum grade of C. Course Topics:
- Review of scientific principles
- Gravity, projectiles, and satellites
- Fluid mechanics
- Thermal energy and thermodynamics
- Heat transfer and changes of phase
- Mixtures
- Acid-base and oxidation-reduction reactions
- Introduction to organic nomenclature
- Rocks and minerals
- Plate tectonics and Earth’s interior
- The solar system
- The stars
- Cosmology
Textbooks: Textbook information can be found on the Book Inn website Required Materials:
- A scientific calculator capable of scientific notation, logarithms, and exponents is required.
- Students should be prepared to create computer-generated graphs.
Students may make use of SCC computer lab facilities outside of class hours as necessary to create graphs.
Grading System: An overall grade of C or higher is required for transferability.
A = 90 - 100
B = 80 - 89
C = 70 - 79
D = 60 - 69
F = 0 - 59 Student Learning Outcomes:
- Define and apply science-related vocabulary.
- Describe behaviors of projectiles and fluids.
- Describe energy changes, including those involved in phase changes.
- Classify substances (including mixtures and organic compounds) and reactions (including oxidation-reduction reactions and acid-base reactions).
- Describe primary geology concepts, including the rock cycle and plate tectonics.
- Describe the primary features of the solar system and the universe.
