SUR 101 - Introduction to Surgical Technology


Lecture Hours: 4 Lab Hours: 3 Clinical Hours: 0 Credits: 5

Description: This course includes a study of the surgical environment, team concepts, aseptic technique, hospital organization, basic instrumentation and supplies, sterilization, principles of infection control, and wound healing.

Grading System:
Students must maintain a final overall average of 80. An average of less than 80 will prevent students from continuing in the program.

A = 90 - 100
B = 80 - 89
C = 70 - 79
D = 60 - 69
F =   0 - 59


Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  1. Compare the history of surgery to surgery today, the role of the Surgical Technologist to other surgical and hospital personnel, and hospital organization to the surgical suite.
  2. Evaluate the principles of microbiology as they relate to the infectious process, transmission, and body defenses.
  3. Analyze the principles of sterilization and disinfection. 
  4. Identify basic surgical instruments by site, analyzing the care, handling, and classification of each.
  5. Identify and explain the use of various pieces of equipment in the operating room.
  6. Evaluate supplies used in the operating room.
  7. Assess the use of sutures and wound closure materials.
  8. Analyze general patient care and safety in the surgical suite to include hemostasis and blood replacement.
  9. Analyze diagnostic procedures performed on the surgical patient.
