DHM 157 - Introduction to Transmissions and Torque Converters


Lecture Hours: 2 Lab Hours: 3 Credits: 3

Description: This course is a study of various transmissions, torque converters, and differentials used in semi-truck equipment.  This includes automatic transmissions, manual transmissions, multiple gear rear ends, and synchromesh gear boxes.

Prerequisite(s): Take DHM 159  or CWE 113  and DHM 173

Grading System:
An overall grade of C or higher is required for transferability.

A = 90 - 100
B = 80 - 89
C = 70 - 79
D = 60 - 69

Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Identify the relationship between speed and torque in gear ratios.
  2. Identify the flow of torque through manual and automatic transmissions.
  3. Identify the operation of clutches and torque converters to transmit engine torque.
  4. Perform gear lash measurement and adjustment procedures.
  5. Perform maintenance and repair procedures for driveline components.
