ENG 201 - American Literature I Lecture Hours: 3 Credits: 3
Description: This course is a study of American literature from the colonial period to the civil war.
Prerequisite(s): Take ENG 102 with a minimum grade of C. Course Topics:
- Writers and their Works
- Social, Historical, and Cultural Influences on Literature
- Critical Analysis
- Synthesis of Secondary Criticism
- Essay Development
- MLA Guidelines
Textbooks: Textbook information can be found on the Book Inn website Required Materials:
- Access to a computer with Windows 2000 or newer
- Ability to format .doc, .rtf, or .html documents
- Internet access.
Grading System: An overall grade of C or higher is required for transferability.
A = 90 - 100
B = 80 - 89
C = 70 - 79
D = 60 - 69
F = 0 - 59 Student Learning Outcomes:
- Identify writers and works of the period.
- Relate the social, historical, and cultural influences in literature in oral and/or written analyses.
- Analyze or explicate works using formalist criticism.
- Defend original theses with relevant evidence from primary sources.
- Synthesize several critical analyses/secondary sources into an essay that conforms to MLA guidelines.
