HIM 216 - Coding and Classification I


Lecture Hours: 3 Credits: 3

Description: This course includes a study of disease and procedural coding and classification systems.

Prerequisite(s): Take AOT 141  with a minimum grade of C.
Course Topics:
  • Level II National Codes
  • Assigning diagnoses codes
  • Coding for Anesthesia
  • Coding guidelines for surgery
  • Coding for surgery
  • Use of CPT codes
  • Levels of evaluation and management services

  • Medical dictionary

Grading System:
An overall grade of C or higher is required for transferability.

A =  90 - 100
B =   80 - 89
C =   70 - 79
D =   60 - 69
F =     0 - 59


Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Utilize CPT codes to code a wide variety of patient services.
  2. Differentiate between Evaluation and Management services.
  3. List the major features of Level II National Codes.
  4. Apply coding and conventions when assigning diagnoses codes.
  5. Identify coding guidelines for anesthesia and surgery.
