MTT 111 - Machine Tool Theory & Practice I


Lecture Hours: 3 Lab Hours: 6 Credits: 5

Description: This course is an introduction to the basic operation of machine shop equipment.

Corequisite(s): Take MTT 120

  • Shop Safety
  • Machine shop equipment identification
  • Basic measuring and inspection
  • Basic milling operations
  • Basic turning operations

Required Materials:
  • Scientific Calculator (TI-30XA)
  • Clear Safety Glasses
  • 3-Piece Machinist Starter Kit:
    • 6” Rule
    • 1” Micrometer
    • 6” Dial Caliper

Grading System:
An overall grade of C or higher is required for transferability.

A =  90 - 100
B =   80 - 89
C =   70 - 79
D =   60 - 69
F =     0 - 59


Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Identify all basic measurement tools.
  2. Recognize safe and unsafe work practices in a shop.
  3. Recognize various hand tools and bench work.
  4. Identify the principles and types of cutting-off metal saws accessories.
  5. Perform basic milling operations.
  6. Perform basic turning operations.
