PNR 154 - Maternal/Infant/Child Nursing


Lecture Hours: 3 Lab Hours: 0 Clinical Hours: 6 Credits: 5

Description: This course is a study utilizing the nursing process to meet the needs of the childbearing family. Clinical experiences and address the care of the mother, newborn, and the care of the child with commonly occuring diseases. 

Prerequisite(s): Take COL 101 ENG 101 PSY 201 BIO 112  and MAT 110  or MAT 120  with a minimum grade of C. Take PNR 110 PNR 120 PNR 121 PNR 130  and PNR 140  with a minimum grade of B. 
Corequisite(s): Take PNR 180

Grading System:
An overall grade of B or higher is required for transferability.

Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Identify and apply Erik Erikson’s stages of Growth and Development to the Infant, Toddler, Preschool, School Age and Adolescent patient population.
  2. Identify and analyze commonly occurring health problems and or disease processes of the Infant, Toddler, Preschool, School Age and Adolescent patient population.
  3. Compare and contrast the etiology, clinical manifestations, assessment strategies, medication and the therapeutic management utilized in the nursing care infants, Toddler, Preschool, School Age and Adolescent patient population.
  4. Identify and incorporate developmentally appropriate psychosocial tasks, milestones and risk factors for abuse, neglect and nonviolent trauma related to the pediatric population across the lifespan.
  5. Analyze and interpret an electronic fetal monitor strip for signs of fetal compromise/acidosis.
  6. Identify appropriate nursing interventions for the treatment of the potentially hypoxic/acidotic fetus.
  7. Apply classroom theory to identify women at increased risk for complications of pregnancy and the postpartum period (e.g., preterm labor, antepartum hemorrhage, hypertensive disorders, etc.)
  8. Devise and develop a nursing plan of care for an antepartum/intraparutm/postpartum/or neonatal client. 
  9. Provide situation-appropriate care to female patients and normal newborns.
